The Story So Far

August Lessons for Learning

inspired by Anis Mojgani's monthly lessons.

  1. You need people - to tell you it’s okay or it’s not okay, and that either way, you can count on them.
  2. Ask for help, and then learn to accept it.
  3. At the same time, don’t be fooled into thinking ‘advice’ is always right. People carry along their baggage, their mistakes and their wish for how they had done things better. Not everything has to apply to you. Take what you need and don’t feel bad.
  4. Many say they care about your happiness, few will mean it.
  5. You are bigger than this moment, your failures and your mistakes.
  6. Do not let your doubts sabotage your happiness.
  7. Again, hold the responsibility of your life with greater care. You’re not here to live for anyone else’s approval.
  8. Carve out time for conversations.
  9. Talking for eight hours about anything and everything is sometimes needed.
  10. If you have to take a risk, believe in it.
  11. The great opportunity is where you are. Do not despise your own place and hour. Every place is under the stars, everywhere is the centre of the world. - John Burroughs
  12. What I’m learning in this season: the easy way through is TOGETHER. Whatever’s hard/scary/broken, gather up your people - it changes everything. - Shauna Niequist
  13. It’s okay to be wrong.
  14. Only the mind resists change. - Socrates, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior
  15. Be aware of the creeping and crippling anxious thoughts. When they happen, let it all go.
  16. When we share our struggles, we let others know it’s okay to share theirs. And suddenly we realise that the things we were ashamed of are the same things everyone deals with at one time or another. We are so much less alone than we think. - Jenny Lawson
  17. When everything seems shit, think about three things you can be grateful for today.
  18. Things will pass.
